Saints Advance to
Second Round
The Newmarket Saints returned home this past
holiday weekend to continue their opening round series with Kahnawake.
With the series tied at one game a piece, game three would swing the
momentum in the winning teams favour.
As Kahnawake rolled in Friday to Ray Twinney arena they jumped out to a
great start building a 5-1 lead 6 minutes into the game. Both teams
would trade goals for the remaining 1st period as the Saints trailed 7-4
after one period. Newmarket would regroup in the 2nd outscoring the
Hunters 5-1 to take their first lead of the game 9-8. The scoring would
continue for the Saints in the 3rd period as they scored 4 straight to
take a commanding 5 goal lead. Newmarket would hang on for a 15-13 win.
Leading scorers for the Saints were Ryan Lee 3G, 3A Tyler Laplante 2G,
4A. Mike Woods and Mitchell Barnard each 2G, 3A.
Both teams would return to action the following evening for game four.
Newmarket would jump out to an early lead in this one leading 5-2 after
one frame. The Saints then built the lead to 4 goals after two periods
only to see Kahnawake close the gap to one mid way through the 3rd
period. Jeff Sehl would score the eventual winner as the Saints held on
for a 9-8 win to clinch the series.
"We haven't done anything easy all season long, but a win is a win"
commented head coach Luke Ringler after the game. "We played well and
had to dig deep these last two games. Kahnwake really tested our
character, we couldn't take anything for granted."
Newmarket advances to the second round for the third straight season and
will faceoff against the Clarington Green Gaels.
Game #1 will be Thursday July 7th in Clarington 8:00PM
Game #2 is set for Friday July 8th 8:00PM at Ray Twinney Arena. Subject
to change.
